A couple of days ago, my sister rang me up. She was on a mission. She had decided to sign-up to do this years Cupcake Sale fundraiser on 13th June for the Alzheimer’s Society…and she was roping me in as co-organiser!
Now, we’ve never shone away from fundraising, always happy to contribute to a good cause, but neither have we ever organised our own event before…so why now you may well be asking.
Well, I’ll tell you. Almost 3 years ago, our dear Mum was diagnosed with Dementia. It’s something we are all having to live with, learn about and adapt to every day. No single day is the same. The work that the Alzheimer’s Society is doing is therefore something really close to our hearts and something we really want to do our bit for.
Dementia, whatever form it comes in, is brutal.
We are slowly watching our Mum slip away.
So, an attempt to lighten the mood and raise some money for an amazing cause, we are going to rope in anyone and everyone we can, bake some yummy cupcakes and have the biggest raffle we can! We are going to ‘raise some dough’, all for our Mum and others like her living with Dementia.
Cupcake Day has raised £2.7million since 2016 – let’s make this our biggest day yet!Alzheimer's Society
With nothing but cakes and frosting in mind now, here are a few yummy recipe finds from the good old interweb that should kick my baking creativity brain (and yours) into action.
For a basic recipe that you can adapt yourself, BBC Good Food has a wonderfully easy 5-star recipe.
The Alzheimer’s Society website itself has some great ideas for cupcakes. My favourite has to be the Gingerbread cupcakes with golden syrup icing. Yuh-uh-ummmmmmm!
For all the lemon freaks out there (including me!), you can find a Lemon Fairy Cupcake recipe on the Olive Magazine website. I shall probably be making a giant batch of these and promptly buying them from my own bake sale! ha ha! I might also try the Lemon Meringue Cupcakes from the Martha Stewart website. Lemon heaven!
Chocoholics may be keen on these Super Moist Chocolate Cupcakes. Don’t they look divine?
If you have kids that want to get involved, how about making some cute Butterfly Cakes. My sister and I used to love baking these with our Mum when we were little. I’m sure we will have some of these for sale on the day too.
Got any cupcake recipes you always go to? Please do share in the comments below…I’d love to know!
The disease might hide the person underneath, but there’s still a person in there who needs your love and attention.Jamie Calandriello
If you would like to organise your own Cupcake Sale on 13th June 2019, please visit the Alzheimer’s Society website and sign-up asap before their organiser packs run out.
Alternatively, if you would like to support my sister and I directly, you can donate via our Just Giving page where all monies donated go direct to the Alzheimer’s Society.
I hope you will join us in this fight against the UK’s biggest killer (Dementia has now overtaken Cancer and Heart Disease!) and I send out my most heart felt thanks to all that are able to get involved.
