Times Table Rockstars. A great app for kids!
Kids need help with learning their times tables? Look no further…I’m gonna tell you all about a little app that will help!
A little under 3 months ago, my two little monkeys started a new school. It was a new school in a new country with new kids, new teachers, new methods and new topics. New overload, am I right?!
Yet the ‘new overload’ did not lead to being overwhelmed.
I can honestly say that if I was a hat wearer, I would take it off to my kids. The way they have handled the last few months has been astonishing! One of things that has blown me away the most is the speed at which they (my daughter in particular) have learnt their times tables.
Now, my little mini-me is 9 years old, and until she started her new school, she had not learnt any of the times tables in any formal manner whatsoever, i.e. 1 x 1 = 1, 2 x 1 = 2 and so on. She had learnt to count in 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, 5’s and 10’s, but not officially learnt any of the 12 times tables.
Needless to say, it came as a bit of shock when we found out that the others in her class had already learnt most of the times tables! Yikes!
To follow that, we were told that the kids from the school were expected to practice their times tables skills on an app called Times Tables Rockstars, and ideally should be averaging about 300 points a day.
That sounded like a lot, especially as the kids didn’t know what they were doing…yet!
Now, in the very first days of using the app, my daughter was rather frustrated. She’d been thrust into a school where the teacher expected her to be at a certain level due to her age and she wasn’t anywhere near that level (well, apart from in reading and spelling!) . It took a one-to-one meeting with myself and the teacher to highlight a few things, all of which he was very understanding of.
In a nutshell, we had moved from a school in South Africa to a school in England. Equally great, yet very far apart in terms of where the kids were in terms of certain skills. This massive relocation had been highlighted to the school upon enrollment, but had not been filtered down to the teachers. Oops.
Turns out that my beautiful 9 year old totally had the capacity to understand and learn her times tables…fast…once she had been exposed to it all.
My initial panic for her subsided as she has caught up to her peers very quickly. She has embraced this new school wholeheartedly and fully triumphed over the times tables challenge.
A lot of the credit has to go to Times Tables Rockstars!
Times Tables Rockstars (or TT Rockstars for short!) is the app that our school uses to encourage their kids to love learning their times tables. In my eyes, it totally works!
Now, for us, logins for both kids were provided by the school. The school purchased the app (£60/year for unlimited teachers and students) and it is then allowed to send logins to all pupils and teachers. Teachers can then assign different challenges to each child. For example, my son is 6 and was only set the 2 times table to begin with. He has now been set the 10x as well. My daughter was set all 12. The app then asks questions based on the tables that have been assigned.
In this version, the kids can work in a variety of ways. They can work individually in a timed format and try and answer as many questions as possible in either 1, 2 or 3 minutes. They can do a challenge to achieve different status’, for example, the faster you go, the higher up the rock hierachy you climb…from “Unsigned Act” all the way through to “Rock Hero”! They can even battle against others in their class.
A little bit of fun competition is a great motivational tool, hey!
Each correct answer gets you 10 coins and these coins can be spent on dressing up your avatar in all sorts of rocktastic ways. Punk hairstyles, JoJo Siwa hairstyles, ZZ Top-tastic ‘tashes (oh dear, now I’m showing my age, ha ha!) and so on. The great thing is that the app will still keep track of your ‘lifetime coins’ earned, so the kids can shop to their heart’s content but never lose track of their achievements. I love that!
The app is also available as a family package
You can have 2 adult and 3 child logins allocated to you. At just £6 a year, this is truly a phenomenal deal. I personally haven’t ever purchased as app, preferring to opt for free apps only, but this is definitely one that I would buy myself.
To sum things up (pun intended), TT Rockstars well and truly rocks, and if you have a child that is struggling with multiplication or lacking interest in it, this app may just go a long way to turning things around!
